Vetting clauses in tanker chartering Legal issues relating to apportionment of liability Philippos Alexandrakis, LL.M. Maritime Law (Law School of Athens) ISBN 978-960-622-798-1 Abstract: Despite its significance in the tanker industry, vetting has not been until today subject of thorough research and publication, especially from a legal point of view.Thisstudyaimstoshed lightonthemain issuesarisingfromthevettingclauses. The first part of the thesis focuses on the reasons which led to the development of vetting from an industry practice to a charterer’s right through charterparty clauses and the construction problems arising from such clauses. Moreover, in this part are extensively described the stages of the vetting process and how the inspection is conducted. The second part of the book deals with liability issues between ship- owner and charterer from the breach of vetting clauses, as well as with liability issues of charterer towards third parties due to inadequate vetting inspection in case of oil pollution accidents.
