Ntina Tzavara 227 Although not directly related to the purposes of this paper, it should be stressed that the impacts of administrative detention continue long after an individual is set free. Depending on the period of detention, conditions in the institution, exist- ence of past experiences and personal characteristics, detention is found in some cases, to cause mental disturbance even three years after its termination 36 . What is more, former asylum seekers in detention experience psychological and inter- personal difficulties, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, depression and feel- ings of injustice and mistrust, all related to detention 37 . When examining an international protection claim, the competent authorities of a state evaluate the narrative of the claimant, along with information available for his or hers country of origin and the burden of proof is shared between the inter- viewer and the applicant. Narration during the interview process plays a key role in the outcome of the asylum application 38 . Bearing the above in mind, the current paper wished to explore some of the challenges an asylum seeker is faced with while being in administrative detention, in order to set the ground for a wider dis- cussion concerning factors that might affect the procedure or even the outcome of a claim. idcoalition.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Captured -Childhood-FINAL-June-2012. pdf. 36.
