Modern Technology and Anticrime Policy Erifili Bakirli, PhD in Criminology ISBN 978-960-622-915-2 Abstract: The way ‘mass surveillance’ is applied to citizens in modern societies, is the main aim of the present study, while some of the issues being also examined are: a) if ‘new surveillance’ bears some ‘panoptic’ characteristics, b) which is the ef- fectiveness of the technologically driven means of control and to what extent have they been adopted, and finally, c) if the introduction of modern technology in crime control happens under the necessary human rights’legal protection. Consequently, the book analyzes the use of technology in every stage of modern anticrime policy, focusing to the monitoring of suspects, convicted persons, as well as mere citizens, through cctv systems, biometric controls, electronic ID Cards, data bases, DNA analy- sis, and ‘home confinement with electronic monitoring’ programs. Eventually, author examines how these developments apply in Greece, presenting the results of the research conducted during her doctoral dissertation. COPYRIGHT All rights reserved.
