On the cusp of criminal act Criminality in ancient Greek tragedies and in contemporary Greek case law Michalopoulou Eleni, Public Prosecutor at the Courts of First Instance, PhD in Criminology ISBN 978-960-654-032-5 Abstract: In this book, the ancient Greek tragedy becomes the subject of a crimi- nal study and “ideal types” of Medea, Clytemnestra, Oedipus and Orestes are con- structed. It is investigated whether current case law of the Greek criminal courts is compatible with these“ideal types”, by understanding the criminal behaviors of the infanticide, the genocide andmatricide, husband’s murder and incest.Τhe situations and processes of these criminal phenomena and their evolution over time is sought in this particular study. Cases are selected from the modern case law of the Greek Criminal Courts and attempted to be appertained to manufactured “ideal types”. Modern Clytemnestres and Medeas have almost all the dominant characteristics of the tragic heroines. Although Oreste’s“ideal type” is not verified by case law, impor- tant elements of the tragic hero’s behavior are identified. The Oedipus’“ideal type”is not verified by modern Greek case law. Nevertheless Υokasti’s silence and complai- sance is present through the ages. T COPYRIGHT All rights reserved.
