The book consists of two parts: Under the first/generalpart,mediation isdistinguishedfromtherestoftheADRmethods,while its basic characteristics, procedure and what the author calls the“legal shell of medi- ation”arediscussed. Inthesecond/specialpart,the initiativesoftheEUonmediation (in particular mediation directive 2008/52) and the pertaining private international law issues that may arise are discussed. A central idea is that the mediator is not a fo- rumand an incomplete - sui generis lexmediationis exists, consisting of certain pub- licpolicyprinciplesonly.Moreover,therelevantUNCITRAL initiatives(ModelLawand Singapore Convention) are presented. Finally, a short discussion of Greek mediation law is made, with emphasis given on compulsory mediation in Greece, and some conclusions that single out the special, hybrid character of mediation are drawn.
