Theory and Practice
Georgia Pazarzi,
PhD
Abstract: Maritime transportation services are a very important aspect of the
Greek economy as there are numerous Greek companies providing maritime
transport. Modern economics and business structure requires the knowledge
of accounting for decision making. This book gives accounting interpretation
for specific issues arising from the operation of shipping companies. It deals
with the accounting for revenues from voyage charter, time charter, passen-
ger tickets, as well as from on board services. It also analyses the accounting
for running costs (crew wages, survey, repairs and maintenance, insurance
and dry-docking expenses) and travel expenses (bunkers, agent fees, port
taxes and expenses etc). Besides that, it also covers the accounting for vessel
acquisition and disposal and the accounting for insurance issues concerning
total loss, general and particular average, collision and salvage. The financial
statements of and the most important ratios for the shipping companies are
presented. In addition, part of the book gives practical exercises and their
solutions for all the previous subjects.
