Natalie-Christina P. Samaras

Legal Counsel to the Hellenic State,

Member of the Legal Council of the State, LLD

Abstract:

The present study constitutes a detailed examination of the deter-

mination of the child’s surname under greek law, including analysis specific

to cases where the child’s parents are married, unmarried or in a civil law

contract. Also included is a discussion of the surname of adopted children. In

addition, the study examines the legal process, through which changes may be

made to the child’s surname, including the judicial procedure for the correc-

tion of possible errors in the child’s surname in the birth certificate. The study

concludes with recommendations for amendments to greek law of surnames,

with a view to modernization.
