Advocacy in Cyprus
The Legal Framework and Practice

Abstract:
The author explores the legal history of the framework for Advocates
in Cyprus and explains the role of Advocates evolving from Officers of the Court
during the Colonial days to Officers of Justice after independence under the
patronage of The Attorney General. The detailed provisions of the Advocates Law,
Cap.2 are examined including admission to the Cyprus Bar prerequsites, the role
of the Legal Council, the Disciplinary Board, Local and Cyprus Bar Associations,
the pensions regime and disciplinary offences. Decisions of the Supreme Court of
Cyprus are set out and commented upon as well as the relationship of Advocates
and Judges crucial in the proper functioning of the system. A special Chapter is
devoted on actions against lawyers for malpractice and breach of the duties of an
Advocate and a separate Chapter deals with Community Lawyers providing services
or practising in Cypus. In the second part of his treatise the author examines in detail
aspects of the Art of Advocacy in the field of litigation including techniques for the
examination and cross examination of witnesses , presentation of cases in Court,
the preparation of a case from its initial stages to appeal. Special emphasis is given
to the art of cross examination of witnesses and expert witnesses in particular. The
author deals with the subject in a comprehensive and critical manner and carries in
it his huge experience as a practcing Advocate for thirty five years.
