Drugs: Use - Addiction - Formal Social Control
Anthozoe Chaidou,
Professor of Criminology & Penology
Department of Sociology, Panteion University of Social & Political Sciences, Athens
Abstract: In spite of the enduring “war on drugs” and the enormous human and
monetary resources allocated, they still constitute a major issue globally, both
for states and societies, as well as for international organizations. This book
examines at first the addictive substances, their effects, and the phenomenon of
addiction. There follows an analysis of the social and economic consequences
of illegal drug use, the connection between drugs and crime, and the reaction of
the formal social control. The legislative framework and the existing rehabilita-
tion programs are presented and research activity is reviewed, both in Greece
and internationally. Finally, drug policies are considered and the author’s views
and suggestions on the subject are expressed.
