FOREWORD
It is an honour and a pleasure to provide a Foreword for this
Festschrift/Liber
Amicorum
book, which serves as a tribute to Professor Ioannis K. Rokas, whom in the
course of the years, I have come to know in many roles and capacities, not least those
of a mentor and of a colleague.
Professor Ioannis K. Rokas, graduated from the National and Kapodistrian University
of Athens, Law School (Diploma, 1968) and went on to obtain his PhD degree in
Insurance & Tort Law at the Frei Universitaet Berlin (FU) (Dr. Jur., 1975). Professor
Ioannis K. Rokas (now Emeritus) has been a Professor of Commercial Law at the
Athens University of Economics and Business, (AUEB), where he has held the Chair of
Commercial & Business Law. His academic work spans
inter alia
from over 160 articles
in Greek and Foreign Law Reviews, Commentaries on Court Decisions, numerous legal
opinions as well as to a number of monographs and other academic books, mainly in
insurance law, as well as in maritime law, commercial law
et al
.
He is a member, in various roles and capacities, of numerous professional associations,
including the Athens Bar Association (whereby he has been a practising lawyer
since 1971, authorised to appear before all Greek Courts of all instances), the
International Insurance Law Association (AIDA) - where he currently serves as one
of the Vice Presidents and as a Member of the AIDA Europe Committee, President of
the Hellenic Insurance Law Association (HILA), Co-editor of the Greek Commercial Law
Review, Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Italian book series
‘Insurance Science’, Member of the Editorial Board of the European Insurance Law
Review (AIDA Serbia Chapter). Other memberships include,
inter alia
, the CMI, the
project group “Restatement of European Insurance Contract Law”, the Mediterranean
Maritime Arbitration Association, the Private Insurance Committee of the Greek
Ministry of Trade (i.e. the former Supervisory Authority on Private Insurance in Greece).
Not least, he has been the Chairman of many Legislation & Drafting Committees, for
numerous Greek laws, including those for the new Greek Insurance Contract Act, the
modernization of the Commercial Code, the Law on Private Insurance Supervision,
Patent Law, and he has also served as Vice-chairman of the Hellenic Committee for the
Electronic Commerce.
Professor Ioannis K. Rokas has not only had an elaborate academic career but has also
been a major player in the field of private legal practice. More specifically, he is the
