Cyprus Legal System
Dr Christos Clerides
Advocate Head of the Law Department, Frederick University, Cyprus
Abstract:
The Cyprus Legal System has developed through centuries of legal
history to what it is today; an amalgam of English, Greek and Cypriot legal
practice and tradition. The structure of the Court System developed since
1878, when the British took over Cyprus from the Ottomans but progressed to
a more modern system since the 1960 Independence Constitution, as adapted
and amended on the basis of the Law of Necessity and the accession of the
Republic of Cyprus to the European Union in 2004. The main aspects of Civil
and Criminal Procedure and the Law of Evidence are examined along with
matters relating to jurisdiction, the powers of the Court, Injunctions, Contempt
of Court and the role of Judges and Advocates. The leading role of the Supreme
Court, the hierarchy of Laws and fundamental problems facing the Cyprus
Legal System are brought out and discussed extensively
