The fixed-term employment contract

Konstantinos D. Rizos,

PhD, Attorney at Law

Abstract: The fixed-term employment contract was found at the center of

attention to such an extent that it required a legislative provision at European

level. The thesis examines whether Greece complies with Directive 99/70/

EC compared to the corresponding provisions of the German law. The

Greek Courts’ and the European Court of Justice’s judgments are cited and

commented. Further it also examines the range of employers’ obligations and

the respective rights of fixed-term employees deriving from the principle of

non-discrimination. Last, the thesis examines the alternatives available on the

one hand for the increased protection of fixed-term employees, on the other

hand for the treatment of that contract as a flexible form of employment with

security (flexicurity).
